Croydon is South London’s largest town and a commercial centre, which is the major feature. From Charing Cross it is 15.3 kilometres away and it is London’s metropolitan city too and it also denominates the London Plan. The natural corridor that is in between London and the south coast of England is where the city is situated. History says that Croydon during the era of the Norman Conquest was a part of Surrey, when there was also a church with a mill and also inhabitants of about 365. The expansion of this ancient city was with the status of a market town during the middle ages, where the major production was of charcoal, brewing and tanning of leather. In the year 1803 the Surrey Iron Railways was founded from the area of Croydon to the area of Wandsworth, where the first horse driven trains in the world were made, this led to the growth of the city and made it a commuter town also.
During the 20th century the city of Croydon was known to be a strong industrial city, where there was major activities like metal works, manufacturing of cars etc. but then in the middle of the century the retail and the service sector had replaced all the above and this led to the development of Whitgift centre of shopping. There exists a town plan that would transform the city and it is known as the Croydon Vision 2020. With Brighton becoming the resort for fashion in the year of 1780s there was a major role of this city to cause a halt of the stage coaches. During the 19th century it was the pulpit city of transport links with that of London. With the advancement made in the fields of transport and the filed of communications during the 19th century had paved the path of 23 fold of increase in the city’s population, but this had many negative outcomes like health drawbacks, more in the working section of the society, this also led to the development of Local Board of Health which was in whole of the town, there were construction of reservoirs, sewers, network of water supply, sewage disposal system, pumping station and many more. In today’s time it is known to be a city of shopping. But then there are art and literature too, like the Fairfield Halls, the Warehouse Theatre, Ashcroft Theatre, Arnhem Gallery, then it is also the place of the players of London Mozart, the Beatles, The Monkees, even a place for the film The Da Vinci Code.
